Hypoestes (Hypoestes Sanguinolenta Pink Polka Dot) is a delightful house or garden plant that can be grown as a houseplant or outdoors as an annual. Grown for its variegated, attractive foliage, this plant can be used indoors as a perennial or outdoors as an annual. Hypoestes pink polka dot plants grow readily from seed and will reach just 8 - 12 inches tall and 9 inches wide, making it one of the most minimal-effort house plants or shade plants.
The large, pointed leaves arise from the central stem, creating a neat rosette that looks lovely in the front of the border or in containers of all sizes. The foliage is dark green very heavily splattered with light pink, so that on most leaves, only the midrib and veining remain green. Hypoestes is a great choice to mix in with other shade foliage plants, as its pink will certainly stand out amongst the other foliage.
To grow Hypoestes, sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant in well-draining potting soil, and gently press seeds into the soil, as light is needed for germination. These plants tend to get "leggy", so it is recommended to pinch them back to encourage growth as a more compact plant. Hypoestes can be grown outdoors as an annual in zones 3-8, or as a perennial in zone 9.
